A member of an artistic co-operative is murdered in a brutal fashion and every one of his recent pictures are destroyed. When the local gallery manager reveals that he is producing an art book of the murdered man's work and that he has digital photographs of the missing work, he too is attacked, but due to an interruption survives.

Following this attack the injured man decides to solve the murder which he does with the help of his beautiful assistant and, unknown to him, their animals.

This book is a fusion of the 'gentle' style of classical English murders with the modern cozy mystery genre.

I had a few problems with this book that I'll detail at the end of the review (if you care to look). It's a testament to the entertainment of the story that the book still merits a high rating.

The tale is enjoyable on several levels. Firstly, it's an agreeable tale of interesting characters, each with a distinct personality and back story and plenty of detail to become engaged. Secondly, it's a light mystery, that is, it's one the reader can quickly figure out and then participate along with the characters having that "knowing" to see how long it takes them to figure out what the reader already knows. Finally, the book is filled with interesting details about art, cooking and the areas of the British countryside wherein the tale takes place.

It's a fun little book, easily read and should provide a pleasurable passage of time for a wide range of ages.

Some of the difficulties for me were, to start, first person narrative. The differences between British English and American English made the engagement that much more difficult. Additionally, there were more than a few editing issues that could use some cleaning up (even allowing for the nuances in vernacular). Lastly, there was a jarring concept introduced into the book that, initially startled me. Just as I began to get comfortable with the plot device, it disappeared in the latter part of the story, leaving me somewhat confused why it was introduced at all.

All that said, the story still kept me interested and pleased that I had undertaken to read it. I think there is a little something in it to suit most everyone.

really good reading
Such good detail, fascinating characters. Perfect setting. I could hardly put it down! I look forward to reading more from this author !!!!
The ebook was a good story and I enjoyed it but like another reviewer I thought the long descriptions of food prep and painting mediums was a bit much. I was in a good mood when I read it and it didn't bother me as much as it would have normally but even though I am an artist I really don't need that large of a description. And like another reviewer said the POV made the large descriptions very clunky and just did not seem to do anything for the story.

Also, suddenly telling us that the main character was once a deputy police person and then that he knew some sort of martial art seemed to be an obvious set up for a heroic fight scene which it was.

I don't want to be mean, but the first impression I got as I was reading the first information description on acrylics and mediums was that this was reading much like a fanfiction from a young adult who was putting themselves into the story. You know, a Gary Stu instead of a Mary Sue. Google it if you don't know what that is.

I liked it and would say yeah, read it but if you need to just gloss over the large descriptions because they have nothing to do with the story itself.
This new writer has talent. His characters are engaging and believable. The killer's identity was pretty obvious early-on but a good story line still made Death of a Prawnographer a fun read.

What I object to are the number of typos in this book. Ouch! Sometimes as many as two per page. It would behoove such a promising writer to have someone proofread his book(s) before publishing. Had I not liked the story so much, I'd have given up out of sheer exasperation.
I have to admit based on the cover I was expecting more of a children's book. However this story is an entertaining love/mystery/comedy tale. I found myself pulled into the story very quickly and loved that the author made true characters out of the pets, they were granted a dialogue. The story line is a unique murder mystery. The characters are quite refreshing and make the book. Excellent read, can't wait for more by this author. Don't let the cover fool you!
3 plus stars, really - I enjoyed the story, and it kept me reading until the end but how on earth did all these typos and homonyms and not-even-homonym errors get in? The author seems very knowledgeable about the scene, the topics, art, food, crime - how can you write about "viscous pets" (rather than vicious, I suppose)? Also, commas are good.

Do get an editor (and I'll proofread for you if you want!).

And keep writing, I loved the setting, and the artists' co-op should have several more good stories in it.
Death of a Prawnographer Murder on the Jurassic Coast by Robert Warr is a charming murder-mystery that reminds me of episodes of Murder, She Wrote or the British Midsomer Murder series. The story is told from the first-person perspective of John Courtney, co-owner and manager of the Laughing Labrador Gallery in a small town on the coast of England. John goes to visit his friend, artist Gregory Adams, and finds that Gregory has been the victim of a brutal attack. The rest of the story focuses on John's attempts, as well as those of the local police, to find out 'who done it.'

I don't normally read cozy mysteries, but this book seems to be an exemplary example of one -- best enjoyed on a cold wintry day with a nice cup of tea and a dog (or two) at your feet. Speaking of dogs, our hero, John Courtney, has a beautiful labrador retriever named Honey who also plays a role in the story along with other animals of both the canine and feline variety. The occasional switch of voice from human to animal was done in a clever and subtle manner. The story unfolds in a leisurely pace and leaves the reader eager for another murder in Dorset.
