Humans have been discovered on the Outworlds. And the Army decides to send emissaries. Emissaries like Jason Wander.

As intraplanetary conflicts rage around him and the personal stakes get ever higher, Jason finds that playing planet-hopping politician can be harder than commanding armies.

When united mankind squares off to battle the Slugs for a precious interstellar crossroad, Jason will discover that the most dangerous enemy may be the one he least expects.

Orphan Alliance Jason Wander Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Buettner Adam Epstein Audible Studios Books

Orphan's Alliance is Book Four of the Jason Wander Series. Thus far the series has gone from near great, with the first two volumes (Orphanage and Orphan's Destiny), and has slid to near mediocrity in the current installment.

Jason Wander is a wonderful character though. He was an orphan in a lot of trouble going nowhere fast and was given a choice between imprisonment and the Army. He chose the Army. In the middle of the human fight against the alien invaders, termed slugs, he showed his true character and became a hero. Eventually, Jason Wander finds himself a commander and general, and in this volume a quasi-diplomat.

Buettner has been compared to Robert A. Heinlein, which is not just a stretch, but blasphemy. Nevertheless Jason Wander reminds one of the self-made men that were at the center of many of the Grand Master's works, especially his military heroes.

Orphan's alliance finds Jason Wander trying to pull together the Outerworlds where humans have been transplanted by slugs nearly 30,000 years ago to mine Cavorite, the substance that fuels the light year jumps between planets and universes. They have varying degrees of technological progress, but they are all backwards. It doesn't say much for the human race that they all are very warlike and Wander mostly finds them in near apocalyptic battles against each other.

Jason is assigned to bring peace to the Outerworlds and form an alliance. On Bren, where we last saw Wander broker peace, he is sent to help broker an agreement to offer Bren citizens the chance to develop a space station called The Mousetrap. Things have moved fast in the lifetime of Wander as humans have discovered, thanks to capturing some slug technology, a wormhole nexus (the common name for it among science fiction aficionados) here called a Temporal Fabric Insertion Point (TFIPs). Mousetrap is in the perfect position to defend against any future slug invasions.

The action starts to really heat up as Mousetrap is developed, but I will stop here to avoid spoilers.

At this point in the series it feels and reads like Buettner is writing under a contract. The first two volumes of this series were spectacular. The last two are slightly above mediocre. I love the characters but the story now lacks panache. Orphan's Alliance really suffers in that it is almost a series of short stories strung together to form a whole, and mostly is rather bland and boring. It does pick up in the last third of the book, and brings us to a conclusion and a launching point for the next book in the series. But the writing does not bring out the emotional punch that the story itself should evoke.

But, I will not miss the next volume in this series.

Orphan Alliance Jason Wander Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Buettner Adam Epstein Audible Studios Books Reviews

If you are an old fashioned sci-fi reader, this will take you back to the days of Robert Heinlein. Each book in the series is standalone, but much more fun to take the five books in the series in order.
Good
A worthy continuation. Thanks for continuing this story, Mr. Buettner.
I was one of the first people to order and review Orphanage and I have the entire series. I love this series but the authors style can tend to make some people upset. Almost every chapter closes with a question and a statement that what the character thought would happen was wrong. Kind of like Murphy's Law in hyper-drive. Great series and good technology showing how humans can adapt to almost any situation.
I enjoy 'series' reading so after the 1st book it was easy to continue the story of Jason Wander. They read like a twist of short stories intertwined then turned back into themselves. Good plots and enough suspense to keep your interest.
I have really enjoyed the first three books in the "Orphan" series and "Orphan's Alliance" is a worthy squeal. Like the first three books, the story follows the exploits of Jason Wander as he, more often than not, bumbles his way from bad to worse conditions in his efforts to battle the "Slugs". This time he has more human problems and the "Slugs" are almost a secondary issue. We do see more of Jason developing as a real person, but we still do not see much in the way of "Slug" thinking.

Highly Recommended!

Orphan's Alliance (2008) is the fourth SF novel in the Orphanage series, following Orphan's Journey. In the previous volume, Bren was liberated from the Slugs by the united clans. Among those freed from slavery was Jude Metzger.

In this novel, Major General Jason Wander is now an offworld advisor. He assisted the Bren clans to destroy the Pseudocephalopods on their planet. He has an intuitive grasp of military tactics, but now is acquiring some experience.

Command Sergeant Major DeArthur Ord is the other half of the advisory team. Luckily for the general, Ord knows everything about military strategy, tactics, weapons and logistics. They work well as a team.

Howard Hibble is a Colonel and is still THE top expert on Slugs. He leads a group studying the Slug habits and artifacts. His team has designed the new space cruisers and Scorpion fighters.

Jason Udey Metzger is Jason's godson. Jude was born on Ganymede and has abnormally fast reactions; in fact, sometimes he seems to react before the stimulus occurs. But the headshrinkers have some doubts about his emotional stability.

Sharia Munshara-Metzger is Jude's mother. Munchkin had been Jason's gunner on Ganymede and then the widow of his best friend. Now she is a member of the US House of Representatives.

Audance Planck is a Brigadier General in the Tressen Army. Aud leads a highly mobile unit that appears out of nowhere to surprise the Iridan enemy. He is known as Quicksilver among the Tressen populace.

In this story, Jason and Ord are on Tressel advising the Tressens. The war against the Iridans has stagnated into classic trench warfare. But Jason has brought three hundred Kodiak hovertanks to breach the Iridan defenses and end the war.

Aud has quickly grasped the principles of tank warfare and commands the combined armored and infantry forces. He launches the attack during a heavy rainstorm and the tanks soon drown out the storm. Jason and Aud hitch a ride on the back of a hovertank as it roars through the enemy.

Unfortunately, friendly fire takes out the tank platoon, but the smart rounds only blow Jason and Aud off the top. The tanks are scrap, but they survive the explosions. Now they are stranded in the Barrens, a swamp with very hungry fauna. They hide from a Iridan armored vehicle, but Jason is almost eaten by a giant scorpion.

When the war is won, Jason, Ord and Hibble return to their transport and travel to Earth. There Jason tries to get command of an infantry division as a excuse to have some time with his godson. But he is given a different assignment that just happens to include Jude.

Jason has time to visit Munchkin in Paris. Jude is demonstrating the new Scorpion fighter at the Paris Air Show and Munchkin is providing PR for the manufacturers. Jason finally tells her that Jude and himself will be traveling outbound for Bren and Tressel on their way to a little known planetoid called Mousetrap.

Later, Munchkin arrives on Bren with a government investigative mission examining the black budget. When that mission returns to Earth, she goes with Jason to Mousetrap. There she takes charge of the workers converting the planetoid into a space fortress and arsenal.

This tale continues Jason's conflicts with the Army hierarchy and politicians. The Slugs are willing and able to destroy humanity if they are not stopped. Yet many among the upper echelons just don't understand the continuing danger of the Slug forces.

So Jason and his friends work against the system to defeat the Slugs. The next volume in this series is Orphan's Triumph. Read and enjoy!

Recommended for Buettner fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of armed conflict, political intrigue, and contrary generals. For those who have not previously read this series, the initial novel is Orphanage.
